Information on Contaminated Properties

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and various state and local environmental and health departments have published information identifying sites on Long Island, which contain hazardous contaminants.

An examination of their maps and data identifying the contaminated sites, indicates that your property may be located on, or in close proximity to them.

If you did not create the contamination, you are entitled to apply on grievance day to your local assessor for a reduction in the real property assessed value of your property, to reflect any depreciation in its market value, as the result of the presence of contaminants.

By obtaining a reduction of the assessed value, you will not only benefit financially, but will benefit your community and the environment, by persuading the assessor to take action to compel polluters to expedite the clean up of contaminated sites, at their own cost.

The next grievance day for filing such an application is May 2008.

If the assessor denies your application, you are entitled to appeal his decision to the Supreme Court, Suffolk County.
